Daytona Beach Bike Week 2009 is over but there are still lessons for us all to learn

2009 Bike Week, Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach Bike Week for 2009, which brought together thousands of motorcyclists from around the country, is over. Although there were not as many bike-related accidents and fatalities this year as last year's event, there were still crashes and deaths that may have been avoided.

Motorcycle accidents are often attributed to the bikers themselves. Bikers are accused of speeding, zigzagging between the cars and losing control of their bikes.

As an experienced motorcycle accident lawyer I know that not all injuries and fatalities are due to the actions of bikers. Here are a few things for drivers to be aware of:

  • Many drivers do not know that the same traffic safety regulations and rights on the road apply to both bikes and cars; motorcycles have the right to a full lane of traffic.
  • Drivers tend to follow a motorcycle too closely, unaware of a bikes limitations; it might be easy for a car to go over certain road debris but often motorcyclists may have to evade it or hit the breaks.
  • Drivers sometimes underestimate the speed and distance of a motorcycle when turning in front of an oncoming motorcycle.

Bike Week 2009 may be over, but there are lessons that we can learn from the bike filled event.
