Dangers in Red Light Running

The light is a mile away but we can see it anyway. It turns from green to yellow. We can make it, we know we can. Then, it turns red. Do we stop? Are we able to stop?  As an experienced accident attorney, I have seen the effects of running a red light first hand and know the severity of the accidents that can occur as a result of someone ignoring the color of the light in front of them and dangerously proceeding through the intersection regardless.

A yellow light is designed to alert the driver to stop their vehicle if they can do so safely.  Many drivers try to "make" the light even if it has turned yellow.  This can be a receipe for disaster!  (For more information on what the stop light colors really mean)

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Stop Red Light Running Program, red light running is a very dangerous and serious problem occurring every day in cities all over the world. A study done by the USDOT found that over 100,000 accidents are caused a year by red light runners and over 1,000 deaths result out of those accidents. This significant number calls for a change.

Many cities, such as Gainesville and Starke have instituted red light cameras in order to begin the process of raising awareness and cracking down on those who violate the red light rules. However, studies, such as one conducted at the University of South Florida  have critiqued the use of red light cameras and suggested other alternatives that are safer, more effective and not based on greed. (see the links below)

The bottom line: something needs to be done. To get involved, go online to http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/intersections/col_redlight.htm to see what you can do in your community or simply in your life to stop the trend of red light running and make our roads just a little safer for everyone, including ourselves.
