Congratulations Floridians! An Ocala and Gainesville Accident Attorney says, "Job well done!"

Florida drivers should congratulate fellow motorists, law enforcement, and the Legislature for a job well done saving lives this year-420 lives, to be exact.

A 14% reduction in traffic related fatalities from 2008 to 2009 may not seem like a lot, but to add some perspective-that's approximately 22 classrooms of elementary school kids.

So, what are Floridians doing right to make our streets safer?  The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle (DHSMV) attributes the decline in traffic fatalities to a complex interaction of factors:  economic conditions, safer vehicle design, fewer overall vehicles on the road, and the primary seat belt law.

While poor economic conditions means less cars on the road, the decrease in traffic-related deaths may also be associated with Florida's primary seat belt law.  The law went into effect in June 2009, allowing police to ticket adult drivers for not buckling up.

According to DHSMV statistics, approximately 917 of the total 1,555, traffic fatalities in Seat Belt Equipped Vehicles (SBEV) failed to wear seat belts.  That's 59% of those killed!  Seat belt usage protects vehicle occupants from being ejected during a crash.  When thrown during a crash, the risk of death is five times greater.

The fall in Florida traffic-related deaths mirrors the nationwide decline in fatalities (8.9%), as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).  The NHTSA also attributes the decline to aggressive safety belt campaigns and economic factors.
