Blind-spot cameras save kids and seniors - Gainesville accident attorney explains.

In the U.S., no less than 50 children are backed over each week-two of whom will die.  In total, about 18,000 pedestrians, most of whom are young kids and elderly, are injured in back-over crashes annually. Tragically, Florida pedestrians are no exception.

The problem-as cars and SUV's have gotten larger, so have blind spots.  Drivers simply fail to notice small children playing behind their car. Rearview mirrors are not enough.

The proposed solution-a rear-view camera, equipped with an alarm, to eliminate blind spots.  It's estimated these cameras may save up to 112 lives and prevent 7,000 injuries per year.

As a Gainesville accident attorney, I've seen families devastated when a SUV or motor vehicle backs over a child or senior.  Since Florida has the second highest pedestrian fatality rate in the U.S., according to the National Safety Commission, I support mandatory rear-view cameras in 100% of new vehicles by 2014.

Many of these deaths happen in driveways and parking lots, involving children under age 5 and elderly 70 years and older.  Tragically, family members are responsible for the crash in 70% of fatal cases.

Rear-view camera technology already exists, but is only standard on about 20% of 2010 models.  Adding a standard backup camera is only estimated to add $200 to the price of a vehicle.

Until back-up cameras are standard in all vehicles, check out Consumer Reports to find your car's blind-spot zone rating.  The top five worst offenders include: 2006 Jeep Commandeer; 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche LT; 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche; 2008 Hummer H2; and the 2004 Ford F-150 XLT.
