Today starts the 19th annual Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach. From Oct 13 to 16 thousands of bikers from across the country will roar into the area to enjoy a long weekend of fun, music, and partying.
As a local resident of Daytona Beach and motorcycle accident attorney, I wish all a good time. I also urge motorists to take extra caution on the roads by looking twice, even three times, for the often hard to see biker and for bikers to be safe and aware of the new motorcycle helmet recommendations.
When choosing a motorcycle helmet-look for the sticker.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently updated the law regulating motorcycle helmets to help bikers choose safer, more easily identifiable DOT-compliant helmets.
While helmets are not required under Florida law for riders over 21 years old, the NHTSA reminds bikers that when shopping for a helmet, to choose one that conforms with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 218.
Compliant helmets now carry a sticker with the manufacturer's name, the helmet model, and the words "DOT FMVSS No. 218 Certified."
In recent years, bikers have chosen unsafe, novelty helmets. NHTSA statistics show that only 54% of bikers wore DOT-compliant helmets in 2010.
I urge bikers to ride safe with DOT-compliant helmets. Remember, in the event you choose to "ride free," Florida requires additional insurance.
Remember, riding and drinking is not only unsafe, it is illegal too. Be safe and enjoy our sun, lovely beaches, and the weekend!
